APS106H1 S
Fundamentals of Computer Programming – Winter 2015

The course taught the basics of how to program in C language. It is a first year course about programming, so the students were not expected to have any background. The course started with simple programs, and went through more complicated ones. We spent a lot of time talking about pointer, which is a very powerful tool in C programming, and its relationship with arrays and strings. Regarding the labs, each week we had to solve a problem related to the topic which we were studying. We went to a lab, at a determined schedule, to develop the program, and after the TAs graded individually; we didn’t need to do any pre-lab, but we should know the material taught in class to solve the problems. Regarding the evaluation, we had 2 midterms, 20% each, the sum of all lab grades were 10%, and the final exam 50%.

CSC108 – Introduction to Computer Programming

Post by Admin on Fri May 29, 2015 1:56 am

CSC108 is a course for those who want to start from the beginning, without any previous
background of computer programming. In this course, you will have the opportunity to go to class knowing what the professor will teach. It is possible because there are online videos designed to introduce the content prior to classes and there are also exercises. The approach is composed basically by three ideas: prepare, rehearse and perform. In this way, you might be able to understand complex ideas in a shorter amount of time and will easily follow the class if you do all the proposed activities. The course forum is very helpful. There are many students taking this course at the same time and it makes the forum busy and very interesting.

If you google CSC108 Winter 2015 you will probably see the course website for this term. There, you will find a lot of information about grade’s composition, assignments and also past exams. The assignments are taken very seriously and it takes a good part of your final grade. The assignments are very interesting and you will be developing many functions in order to reach a specific goal, making the experience close to what is seen at the “real world”.
